This study is being conducted by Dr. Tyler Quinn, Dr. Bethany Barone Gibbs, and Dr. Paul Chantler at West Virginia University.

What is the study about and how long will it last?

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of physical activity done at work on
the health of your heart and blood vessels. WVU expects to enroll approximately 40 participants in the research study.
  • You will be asked to complete 1 in person visit, to wear small movement monitors for 1 week, a heart rate monitor for 2 days, a blood pressure cuff for 2 days, to complete a daily stress and activity diary, and saliva will be collected on 2 days during on working days.
  • It will take approximately one week for total participation.

What will you be asked to do?

(1) Screening: You will complete a telephone/online questionnaire to determine if you are eligible for the study.
(2) Consent: After completing the screening process you will be invited to an in-person or virtual baseline assessment visit. The study will be explained to you, you will have opportunity to ask questions, and agree to participate in the study.
(3) Baseline Assessment: After providing informed consent, the following information will be collected (in order): 1. Medical history (medications, smoking status, known disease, physical limitations using a standard medical history form) 2. Demographics (age, race/ethnicity, sex) and job status/history. You will then be instructed on and asked to wear the monitors. You will be instructed on the proper location and application of the monitors and be asked to place them on your body underneath your clothing in a private exam room. You will also be taught how to collect saliva samples.
(4) Ambulatory Monitoring: You will then leave the visit with the physical activity monitors on your body and wear them for 24 hours a day for 7 days which will include at least 4 days that you are at work. On 2 of the 4 working days, you will wear the cardiovascular measurement monitors and on two other workdays you will collect saliva samples. At the end of each workday, you will complete an 8-item paper questionnaire about job stress.
(5) After completion of the study, you will return the monitors and saliva samples to the laboratory in person or in the mail via a pre-paid package.

What are the risks and benefits?

The risks in this study are minimal. There may be boredom, stress or frustration form answering study questionnaires. You may experience skin redness and irritation from wearing the activity, heart rate, and blood pressure monitors.

You will not directly benefit from participating in this research. The knowledge gained from this research may eventually benefit others.

Will I be compensated for my time in the study?

Upon the full completion of all study procedures, participants will receive up to $200 total as compensation. Participation in this study is voluntary and you are free to discontinue at any time.

What do I do if I want to participate?

If you are interested, you will need to answer a few questions about yourself, your work, and your health to determine if you appear to be eligible. If you complete the questionnaire, you will be asked to provide some specific information, like your complete name, email, and mailing address, so that the study staff can contact you regarding your participation in this study and schedule you for an assessment visit. The average time to complete this screening questionnaire is approximately 10 minutes. Your responses to the questions are confidential and will be kept in a secured location only accessible to study staff and investigators. If you are found to be ineligible for the study, all information collected will be destroyed upon completion of the questionnaire.
